Pre-2000 figures are estimates · Rank based on nominal market cap within each snapshot
Market Cap Heatmap, 1950–2025
All companies that appeared in any top-25 ranking across 16 five-year snapshots. Darker = higher valuation. Gray = not ranked that year. Hover for details.
Sorted by aggregate market cap across all years. Click any year header to sort by that year.
Market cap scale
$0$100B$300B$500B$750B+
Scale uses √ transform so mid-tier companies stay visible. Pre-2000 = estimates. Gray = not in top 25 that year.

Market Concentration, 1950–2025
How much of the top-25 total do the biggest firms hold? Share held by the top 1, 5 and 10, plus the Herfindahl index (HHI) of the top 25. The dashed line is the HHI if all 25 were equal size (400). Hover a year for the leader and effective number of equal-size firms.
Shares are within the top 25 only, not the whole industry. HHI uses market-cap shares of the 25 listed companies.

Slope Graph — Compare Two Snapshots
Pick any two years. Lines connect each company’s rank at both ends: green climbed, red fell, grey held. Grey names with no line dropped out of the top 25 (left) or entered it (right). Click a company for its lineage.
With “Same company” on, mergers within a corporate family (e.g. Glaxo → GlaxoSmithKline) are connected as one company; otherwise only exact names match.

Value Flow — Company to Therapeutic Area
Each company’s market cap is split evenly across its listed flagship drugs, then across each drug’s therapeutic areas. Ribbon width = allocated value. Hover a ribbon for the drugs behind it. Labels are skipped for the smallest companies when they would collide.
An illustrative allocation, not revenue: it shows where a company’s flagship portfolio sits, not how much each drug earns. Drugs without a therapeutic-area mapping are Unclassified.

Therapeutic Areas Over Time
The same drug-based allocation as Value Flow, summed across all 16 snapshots. Switch between a centered stream, a stacked area and 100% share, in 2025 dollars or nominal.
Allocation is illustrative (market cap split across flagship drugs). Grey “Unclassified” is cap tied to drugs outside the thirteen tracked areas, such as consumer products, vitamins, generics and bone or blood-supportive drugs.

Lineage Atlas — Mergers and Family Strength
Every corporate family with recorded mergers, drawn once. Under each diagram, bars show the family’s combined inflation-adjusted market cap across all 16 snapshots (faded = estimated).
Combined cap sums every family member that appeared in a top 25 that year, in 2025 dollars.

Growth — Who Compounded Fastest
Inflation-adjusted market cap at two snapshots for every company ranked in both, sorted by real compound annual growth. Open circle = start, filled = end. Click for lineage.
Real CAGR in 2025 dollars. Companies ranked in only one of the two years are listed beneath the chart, so survivors are over-represented.

Churn and Tenure — Who Falls Off
For each snapshot: how many of the top 25 were new, how many from the previous snapshot dropped out, and the median continuous tenure of the current top 25. Hover for names.
Tenure is counted in 5-year snapshots and starts at 1950, so early values are capped. With “Same company” on, a merger inside a family does not count as an exit and entry.
